Sensory Defensiveness

Meet John, Joan and Dustin. They all have sensory defensiveness. They may view touch as an anxiety producing attack, or unexpected contact as danger. Or they may have the opposite reaction of craving pressure on their skin or only feel "OK" after heavy exertion. They may have many sensory eccentricities like always removing labels from their clothes, over responding to sound, smell or movement. These are typical patterns studied in sensory defensive individuals at all ages and developmental stages.

In this video, Patricia Wilbarger, a noted occupational therapist and consultant, acquaints the viewer with the diagnosis "sensory defensiveness". Through actual cases she explores the scope of the problem, it's impact on the individual and family, the significance of identification of sensory defensiveness, and proposes three intervention approaches.
